Nesting

Nesting is a mechanic in Path of Titans that allows a player to build a nest and hatch other players from eggs or adopt existing juveniles into their family.

Building Nests[]

Every dino gets the ability to build a nest once it reaches sub-adult and will receive an associated quest that acts as a tutorial.

Nests can be started by selecting the "Build Nest" option in the Tab menu, just above the Social and Character tabs. Doing so will cause a footprint of the nest to appear, showing where it can be placed, as well as an overlay showing the abundance of nearby building materials. Once the nest starter has been placed, the player will be directed to gather and contribute materials to finish constructing it.

Grouped dinos can also contribute materials to groupmates nests, even if they are not of the same species.

Materials[]

Every nest requires some amount of two or three different materials, and the materials used depends on the species. Many different dino species share the same material requirements.

Materials must be hand-delivered to the nest, one at a time, so building a nest near abundant materials can be important, especially for slower dinos. There are several "nesting sites" on the map which have pre-built nests near materials required for that type of nest; these nest cannot be interacted with in any way, but they do show players where materials can be found.

Hatching and adopting[]

Once the nest has been completed, it will quickly begin producing egg slots. The nest owner can invite other players to hatch from the nest as long as there are egg slots available. Nests can hold up to five egg slots at one time but regenerate them quickly.

To hatch from a nest, a player must receive an invite. Once they have received and accepted the invite, they must log out to the character selection screen and click the glowing egg icon on the bottom of the screen. There, they can create a new dino of the nest owner's species, though they can choose their own subspecies. If a player already has a character of that species, the character's growth will be reset, but they retain all their earned Marks, purchased skins, and abilities.

Newly-hatched characters begin life as hatchlings and must complete a tutorial, similar to the Tutorial Cave, but the player can choose to leave the nest and immediately explore the world without completing the tutorial. Completing the tutorial awards the player with a special eggshell nest/home cave decoration.

Existing juvenile characters can be adopted into a nest of any species of the same diet. They will not receive the nest tutorial quest or eggshell decoration, but they receive all other benefits from being a member of the nest and family, including being allowed to teleport directly to the nest immediately after being adopted.

Benefits[]

There are many small benefits from building and being part of a nest.

Completing the nest building tutorial awards a substantial amount of growth and Marks.[How much?]

Being near the nest when it is above 50% completion gives the owner and their children increased health regeneration. Sleeping near the nest when it is 75% complete also allows them to change abilities as if they were in a Home Cave.

Parents who are near their children, up until the adolescent growth stage, receive a damage buff, and children receive a growth buff from being near their parents.

Children can eat and drink food directly from the nest. Food and water are supplied by the parent. Groupmates can also contribute food by carrying food directly to the nest, but it must be food that they can eat; if you are a hypercarnivore, you cannot contribute carrion to the nest of a groupmate even if they and their children have a scavenger diet.

Being part of a family allows you to see all of your immediate family members (parents, children, siblings) in the Family tab, displaying their name, PlayerID, species, and growth stage.

Maintenance[]

Nests do not decay over time, but they can be damaged by other players, requiring additional materials to repair. Nests are not immediately destroyed upon reaching 0 HP, but they will disappear after some time[How long?] if not repaired.

Notes[]

  • The material abundance indicator when placing a nest looks for some arbitrary amount of nearby material rather than what is actually required. A material may be shown as "scarce" even if the nest is built right next to a resource node with all the materials needed, while other materials may be shown as "abundant" because there are many nodes in an area even if they are all far away.
  • The nest tutorial can be completed multiple times by repeatedly hatching the same character. Doing this will award multiple eggshell decorations, but the player will not receive any further marks from the quest after the first one.
  • The developers have stated on the nesting blog entry[1] that the nesting feature is a work-in-progress and will likely receive updates and revisions based on player feedback in the future.

Trivia[]

  • Nesting was a part of the fourth stretch goal, worth $64K AUD ~ $45K USD, and was added on October 8, 2024.
